I'm debating at this point whether to bite the bullet and move to an intel platform, or to pick up a new processor and squeeze a bit more out of my current rig.

How much of a performance increase would I see if I moved from a slightly overclocked 3800+ to a 4800+ ? I'm mostly interested in stability, and playing some games like supreme commander and oblivion.

Currently running and a8n premium with 2gb ram and an 8800gts...

Depends on whether you can find the CPU you want and for what price. I got the very last 4800+ from NewEgg last december and it was definitely helpful. However, at some point before next year I plan to switch to Intel and Windows Vista. So yeah, there's a good performance delta between stock speeds and you should be able to OC that 4800 to 2.8G easy. With that you should have no trouble running Oblivion.

My vote goes for saving your pennies towards a quad core whenever your ready to upgrade. I think you will have a much greater bang for your buck upgrade then, unless of course you can pick up a 4800 for dirt cheap then it might be worth it. Of course what do i know i'm still running a athlon 64 3400 single core cpu. :( I'm waiting till the quad cores come down some more in price and get a big upgrade. :D
