I would say you are really pulling its neck.

That should be a prescott, so you dont have much OCing to do, and at 3.0 ghz it will struggle to keep up with the X1900XT. If you are looking for more frames, I say slap in another GT.

An X1900 does not belong in there IMO, but you can always go for it. But it sort of reminds me of when I put my 9800 pro in my 1ghz p3. in your case it wont be as drastic, but I still feel that the card will be slowed down. To keep up with that card you need at least an pentium 840 EE/955 Presler but better yet an Athlon FX/OCed Opteron.

edit for spelling

I disagree with JAG. At 1600x1200 4AA/16AF, in games like COD2 and FEAR, X1900XT will provide a significant boost in performance. Although some cpu bottlenecking is almost inevitable, we are looking at 90% performance boost with X1900XT over 7800GT vs. maybe 10% boost for FX57 over P4 3.0ghz at high image quality settings.

Almost all latest games are gpu limited. Not to mention that hopefully patches for HT in games will give a performance boost to that P4 machine. Ask yourself if 7800GT is inadequate for your needs before dropping $500 on a videocard (esp since G71 is around the corner). Also if we are talking about buying a videocard and not selling the 7800GT, I woudn't do it. 7800GT should last you until next fall. Besides Oblivion I cant think of much that would tax it, unless you must have 4AA at 1600x1200.

Yes i will be selling the 7800gt as i wont need it once i get the x1900xt.
I like to run all games on 1680 by 1050 because it looks so nice on my monitor.

Problem is im not going to pay more than 489 for the 1900xt. Im not gonna spend 600+ when the new nivida cards come out.

at that resolution, the X1900 will help a lot, but I still think that plopping another GT, will be cheaper and a wiser choice. Then again, think of G71... its just around the corner.

A thing I suggest you do is get an EVGA 7800 GT, and put it in SLI with your current one, and then step up to the 7900GTX by adding some bucks throu their step up program. Then you can still sell your current GT, but you wont have to wait until march to enjoy good frames.

If you go with ATI you will have a fast video card now, but for sure not as fast as the 7900 GTX.

my suggestion will cost 300 for a GT + ad 300 for a 7900 GTX (estimate of 600 MSRP) - 200 for your old GT = 400 (but hell you will have the fastest card on the planet in march).

consider a full upgrade thou, that processor is leaving you behind...

Again. It isnt cheaper. id have to pay 300 bucks for another GT and another 100+ for a SLI mobo. x1900XT is only 489 at newegg.
