Upgrading from 6GB to 12GB...

I have an MSI X58 Platinum SLI motherboard that came installed with 3 X 2GB Kingston KHX1800C8D3/2G memory modules. I want to install 3 more 2GB modules but the ones that were installed are out of production. Do the memory modules have to be exactly alike to work properly? If not what would you suggest?

Both sets need to run the same speed & voltage. So choose a set that will run the same as your original set. That's about the only factor.

i'd suggest if you want stability with UDIMM that you do 3x4gb and yes alike is always a rule of thumb for stability. unless they are dissimilar enough for the mobo to detect
