Upgrading from 1700+/NForce2 @200FSB to 2.4C/P4P800

Options:
1. get a faster AMD CPU like 2500+, etc. (~$95)
2. get an Intel P4 2.4C + Asus P4P800 (~$300+)

Current RAM is 1x Corsair PC3200C2 512MB

#1, I'd figure I could squeeze it up to 3200+.
#2, I'd probably hit 3.2GHz flat-out

Comments?

The time frame will be a couple of months from now so prices WILL be less

Option #3.) Get an Athlon 1700 WPMW, run it at 2.4 GHz, and blow the doors off anything else (including 3.2GHz Intel) for $60.

Excuse my ignorance, but is the "1700+ WPMW" a special stepping of the 1700+ that overclocks damn well?

The reason I ask is I'm upgrading from a 1.4 Tbird soon, and I am trying to decide between gettting a 2500+ or 1700+ with an Abit NF7-S. I just don't want to get stuck with a bad stepping of a 1700+ that won't OC much.

As for what I would suggest doing for the thread starter, I'd go for the 2500+ unless you want to get a good stepping of a 1700+.

usually a 0310 wpmw or 0319 wpmw are good steppings. the 0310 xpmw are supposed to be good too.

Or get a 2.4C and overclock that to 3.6 and blow the water out of anything else.

that would be very tough to do. also, he would prolly need faster ram which will further contribute to the cost

At 3x the cost. I'd stick with the 1700+ in this case.
