Upgrading for Video Editing?

Hi, I currently have an Athlon XP2400 with MSI KT333 motherboard with 512Mb of PC2700. I am struggling editing long home made videos with this setup as I find Premiere seems to freeze for no apparent reason. I've tried lots of different solutions, none of which have helped therefore I'm left with the only choice to consider hardware upgrades. I was going to upgrade the RAM but I'm worried that it will have no effect and the problem lies elsewhere.

Therefore, I'm considering an Intel Pentium 4 3 or 3.2Ghz CPU but I don't know what motherboard or memory I should be looking out for, I'm kinda' out of the hardware loop at the moment. Any suggestions?

Thanks for any suggestions.

You have more than enough hardware for what you are trying to do. Either the problem is the software, or you have a specific component that is bad. I?m guessing the software is an el-cheapo version that came with the camera? I?d look there. It could also be an OS problem.

However, if you do upgrade, I?d get 1 gig of memory max, and pour the rest of your funds into the fastest CPU you can afford. Just upgrading the memory isn't going to do jack &*$#. I do a LOT of vid capping/editing/encoding?I always see a speed increase when I upgrade the CPU. I have yet to see any noticeable difference using more/faster RAM. Again?this is for a casual (home) user.

Get a 3Ghz CPU, ASUS i875 mobo (unless you want a newer chipset) and 1GB PC3200 memory (2x512MB for dual channel goodness). You may also want to thing about getting some faster drives if you think you'll be doing a lot of editing/video creation.

I don't think its a software problem, I've tried fresh installs, all different driver version etc etc, nothing seems to help. I've ran memtest86 overnight and not one memory error, I just can't figure it out hence why considering a new core system.

Don't really care for latest chipsets etc, just want something rock solid which works!

Cheers for the suggestions.
