Upgrading for GTA 4?

From the benches I have seen, it seems you need a really high end machine to get this game running really well.

So I guess we would have to wait until the hardware catches up, about how long will it take for an "average" gaming PC to run this game really well? Is it feasible for me to wait for this to happen?

My current setup is an Opteron 165 and an 8800GTS, 2GB RAM.

Yes and no. You don't need Quad-SLI GTX 295s and a Core i7 965 Extreme if you're not playing it @ 2560x1600. Actually that sounds dumb because as I recall on HardOCP they said that any more than 2 GPUs causes the game to run slower because of the bottleneck of the Core 2 Quad Extreme they used, although they were not benching with a Core i7 which I imagine would be faster in GTA 4.

The game is seriously CPU bottlenecked, with an Opteron 165 I would say that is your biggest problem. An 8800GTS should be able to handle lower res with it fine, but I'd recommend a GTX 260 for the game really. An average gaming PC running this well probably isn't far off just because of the fact that you're not running it at insane resolutions.

It's allegedly a poorly written console port, so instead of upgrading for one meh game you could just use your current system and run it at console settings (1024x768 & medium quality?).

That lets you wait for intel i7 prices to drop (especially motherboards) and for the new cards from ATI & nVidia to be released.

Yes, running the game on my C2D (2.53 Ghz) was not a very delightful experience. Just managed to get a meager 25 fps at 1024 X 768 resolution.

Runs great on my rig at 1680x1050 with medium texture settings but high on everything else.

C2D @ 3.0ghz
8800GT
2 GB memory
