Upgrading firmware on Burner = Broke???

So I had a Plextor 708A DVD burner...and needed to update the firmware to work with some discs I bought.

Did the upgrade, everything was successful, go to burn a disc and poop...failure every single time.

Tried a couple different versions of firmware...NOTHING worked.

SO fast forward 6 months

building a "new" older computer for my dad, decide to toss the drive in and put the newest firmware on the drive in hopes to get it at least running.

Update the firmware and then rip and copy a DVD movie and it seemed to copy just fine...no errors.

I am lost for an answer....I believe the firmware I used was the same firmware that was currently on the drive...I did nothing else to it.

Any explination as to why the drive all of the sudden works now???

Maybe a bad ribbon cable?
Side note: when firmware flashing, always check that no discs are loaded.

Well I initially thought about it, the drive would funtion(read discs, just bombed when burning)....and the second drive I bought works fine on that ribbon.

I have to ask, why is it bad to have a disc in the drive when updating the firmware? I never knew you were not supposed to have a disc in the drive...
