Upgrading Electrical Service?

Any electricians (or DIYers) that know exactly what is involved in having your electrical service upgraded? We only have 100Amps coming into our house which is pretty small for today's homes. Is it just putting in a whole new breaker box or does it involve stuff outside of the house? I'm not really looking to do it myself (since I don't think I can) ut what all is involved?
