UPgrading CPU MOBO what do i get?!?! Confused and Desperate!

Ok guys I need some help.

My current situation is GigaByte GA-7VAX, AMD XP2000+, 512mb ram, Adaptec Firewire Board, Adaptec 29160 Ultra160 Controller, and Cheetah 10k drives

I am heavy into Audio Engineering and am finding that this setup which I put together in November is still choking when I get to like a track count of 12 or something, which shouldnt be the case with that kind of power, or so I thought.

Anyway, this weekend I am going to upgrade yet again, and was looking for some advice on what CPU/MOBO/RAM to get. Not sure if I should get Asus/GB/etc for mobo Amd/Intel/etc for cpu

Any ideas are greatly appreciated guys.

What OS? If win2k or XP doubling your RAM may solve your bottleneck.
