Upgrading CPU... Is My Motherboard Compatible?

Can anyone tell me if the Pentium E6500 Wolfdale is compatible with my Asus P5B motherboard? The P5B is a LGA 775 mobo, and the E6500 is a LGA 775 CPU, but I read somewhere that the E6500 needs a P45 mobo. My motherboard has never given me even one problem and I'd like to keep it as long as possible. I tried different Google searches before posting, but I couldn't find an answer, so I'm turning to you guys.

The quad cores are still out of my price range, as are the higher C2D's. I did a spec-to-spec comparison of the E6500 Wolfdale and the E6300 Conroe the only differences seem to be that the E6500 has a higher speed (2.93GHz vs 1.8GHz) and lower "processing die lithography" (45nm vs 65nm), according to the Intel website.

I got a lot of great advice here when I was putting together the specs to have my computer custom made, so I figured I'd come back to where it all came together for me. Thanks in advance (again, lol).

ETA: I'll be upgrading parts bit by bit, as my budget allows.

Just a note, any Wolfdale will overclock a lot better than a Conroe. I've seen E6400 Wolfs at 4GHz, not saying they all can do it, but they definitely have some headroom.

According to this http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/cpusupport.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=P5B&product=1&os=17 it supports 45nm CPUs, though you will have to upgrade to a beta BIOS.

GL, and OC that baby as high as it'll go. 😛

I'd suggest waiting for a good CPU/motherboard combo deal at the Atlanta area Fry's.
Last week they had a Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P board + Q8200 CPU for $149 after $20 MIR.
Your current 667 MHz memory is too slow to get any kind of a decent overclock out of a Wolfdale CPU.

Thanks for your reply. This whole thing has been kind of confusing, because I didn't know that Intel had renamed all the CPUS's. I had to do some homework before I could even start looking for a new one, LOL. I only pay attention to this stuff when I need to, like now. :$

I've never tried to overclock. I looked into it, but I didn't find any instructions that were written with new, NERVOUS, OC'ers in mind. :\ I think once I do it with my new CPU, I'll write a tutorial with that audience in mind.

Not everyone needs the latest and greatest. The P5B supports C2Q and RAM speed up to 1066, so I wouldn't need a new mobo. I also wouldn't necessarily need faster RAM, because I don't overclock. I don't think there are any quads or higher C2D's that are going for under $100, even on the OEM side. If you know of some, please do post links. 🙂
