First I would like to say hello to all and how impressed I am with this forum body and how helpful you all are. I have been looking at these forums for a few weeks now and am wow'd on how helpful many of you are especially since many of the threads are similar.

A small preface on what im trying to accomplish: I built my computer like 5-6 years ago I mainly game (scII atm. Diablo III whenever that should come), everything else is light (school and personal). So i bought scII and my comp can barely run it haha and Im getting teased since its painful to play. So what im trying to accomplish is upgrade the core essentials to play scII smoothly and diablo III (future). I try not to play video games alot so its hard for me to justify me upgrading and spending so much when my comp can do most of what i want but since i bought the game i need to upgrade.

Current Computer:
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice 939 (Overclocked to help performance haha)
DFI NF4 Mobo
2 80gb hd in raid 0
windows xp pro
8800 gtx
1gb dual channel mem.

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing. Gaming SC II games like diablo III (future)

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread. Looking for best bang for my buck. Obviously i dont upgrade often but i also dont have to play games on ULTRA MODE haha. 300ish?

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from. USA

4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc. No brand preference

5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are. I have a nice full size case, keyboard, mouse, brand new 24 inch monitor, 8800 gtx (maybe), PSU (maybe got a ? about it), Windows 7 64 bit

6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.
The Gigantopithecus Rough Guide to Budget, Low-end, and Mid-range System Building, and many many other build threads.

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds. default. although i overclocked my current system. (but only becuase its struggling to keep up with scII)

8. What resolution YOU plan on gaming with. 1920x1080

9. WHEN do you plan to build it? soon

10. Don't ask for a build configuration critique or rating if you are thin skinned. im not!

So I have researched a lot on the forums here and have caught up quite a bit on hardware.

My budget in mind is mainly for CPU, MOBO, RAM, HD maybe GPU if i can fit or not go over to much. I have a PSU questions and if i need another one may require me to wait alittle for another GPU.

My current PSU is http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817103924

Will this work with current configurations and hardware? For my build im sure 480 watt is plenty of power. I just wasnt sure if there were anything new on that end to prevent me from using it. Looked like connectors are the same?

Also i think for my build a AMD mobo/cpu is going to fit my budget correctly.

At first i was thinking a cpu like the x3 440 rana for budget and decent clock speed. But now think a phenom ii x4 955 quad might be better as with ever changing mobo/cpu i probably want to spend more on the cpu than say a gpu which is more easily upgradable or ram.

I was checking newegg and didnt see a combo for the 955 but saw this? http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.512299 Mobo are my weak point so any advice about this one would be awesome.

Ram: i saw an far consensus about this being a great buy ripjaw 4gb: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-277-_-Product Trying to keep an eye out on sales for this but never seem to see any.

For Hard drive im leaning toward: samsung f3 1TB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...D=3332167&SID=
Although ive seen these go on sale all the time for around 60.

Lastly the GPU: I know i have a old gpu but was wondering if that would hold me back alot. I just bought a new 24 inch monitor and so 1920x1080 would be preferrable on scII caliber games.

Im trying not to focus so much on the amount just a great fit for my needs but no need to waste cash on higher items that wont help me much. Any help is gratefully appreciated and thanks again!!

Aaron

P.S. Feel free to ask me more questions, hopefully i did an ok job describing what im looking for.

Mobo/Cpu combo $225.00
4GB RAM $73.00

Total For the Ram, Mobo, CPU is $298.00 (not including shipping) The Spinpoint will put you at $373.00

(The games are most likely playing slow because of only 1gb or ram.)

I agree with Muskie that the 1GB of RAM is what's really holding you back. Your current PSU is definitely fine. With a $300 budget, you might as well stick with the 8800GTX.

I would probably get this 955BE + M4A87TD/USB3 combo though because you don't need the 785G's onboard graphics and the 870 board has the newest series of AMD chipset as well as USB 3.0.

Awesome thanks for the suggestions!

Bah sorry about the first combo link, looks like it ended that night.

I suspected the ram being one of the biggest problems but figured it was not worth it to invest ram into an old machine.

Quick question on the ram - The gskill i linked is 1600 and i know i would need to go into the bios to have the mobo match the speed but is there is significant difference to go with the faster ram @$16 more?

Thanks again,

Aaron

I would just go with DDR3 1333. DDR3 1600+ doesn't really give you that much better performance. It mostly exists to allow you more flexibility when overclocking the Northbridge (i.e. what used to be the FSB).
