I have a 400 dollar budget to upgrade my mom?s 2 year old computer

Right now she has

2.4ghzCelaron
2x 256mb ddr333 or 400 ram
Intergraded Video
intergraded sound
some CompUSA PSU 300watt
and a DVD rom
and CD-RW
Maxtor 40 gig HD

Now what I want to take out

MOBO
PSU
CELARON
HD

And add

MSI K8NGM2-FID Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

Fortron AX400-PN RoHS

AMD Athlon 64 3000

pqi POWER Series 1GB

Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 80GB 3.5" SATA 3.0Gb

Is that good she needs as much performance as possible. I think that?s a good upgrade.

If you would like to change it in any way to make it better pls post.

Thank you

edit: Chaged CPU to 3000,and chaged the mobo

Consider the 3000+ instead. Practically the same with tiny performance loss, but like $50 cheaper.

What your mom using the computer for? I don't think she'll need 1 gig ram before Vista release.

My suggestion:

AMD Semperon 3400+ and Biostar TForce6100 Socket 754 combo=$179
Keep the RAM
Forton FSP350 350watts PSU=$51
Keep the HD (40gb is plenty)

Total- $230

Are you going to waste mom's money for no reason?

Is she actually complaining about the 2.4 GHz's speed for surfing the web? If so, it's probably a spyware/adware/virus/trojan problem not a CPU problem.

Upgrade the RAM to 1GB, obtain a larger hard drive and you are done. A seagate 80GB, 120GB, or 160GB should work fine.

Making unnecessary changes is a waste, even though I can certainly understand the desire to work on a computer.

Just buy an off the shelf Sempron box from BBuy or something for <$300, then add another 512MB ram if the system comes with 256MB stock. Low-end systems are cheaper prebuilt than white-boxed now!
