Upgrading Bios on HP (w/Asus mb) computer

My father owns an hp 8560c with what HP refers to as the "hawk" motherboard. I know its against all rules we hold holy to upgrade with a bios other than that from the manufacturer, BUT I am convinced that my fathers COM Ports which aren't being detected in WinXP could most probably be resolved with a Bios update. Trouble is HP's latest "up-to-date" bios is from 8/17/99...EECK...upgrading to that didn't due to trick 🙁

Asus MEW-VM seems to be the consensus through a google groups search as to at least the "base" motherboard that this "hawk" is a derivative of.
 
I would be very cautious about flashing that BIOS. Guessing which board HP used is very risky. Maybe the com ports are not turned on in the BIOS?

Best advice to ask HP. Either about the problem with XP or about the MB's origin.
