Upgrading an old system

I have an old 5200+ system laying around that i want to upgrade it and pass to my little brother, he mainly do kids stuff (light gaming and what ever kids do this days).
Anyway i'm using most of the hardware from the old system (9800gt, 2gb ddr2, psu and HD) and looking for good combo deals on the rest (cpu, motherboard and a case).
Budget is 250$ give or take.
I don't know whether to go with AM2+ and put the old DDR2 memory to use (and add 1 more stick if needed) or just go with AM3 and DDR3. Thoughts?

I agree with the Athlon II X4. excellent price/perf. and lots of stable MB out for a good price that are compatible with that ram.

Since you dont upgrade that often, skimping on the CPU might be a bad option. Maybe an AM2+ Phenom X4 would be a much more future proof solution. Reuse your DDR2 if you can.

Maybe you can snag a 1055T and an AM2+ mobo combo from frys or microcenter? that fits your budget.

Thanks alot guys.
I ended up buying an athlon X3 445 + ASRock M3A770DE combo, with a NZXT EVO and 4GB G-skill DDR3 for 240$.
