Upgrading an HP

My friend bought an HP a few years ago (against my recommendations), and now he wants to upgrade.

We're looking at getting a mobo, an Athlon cpu, DDR RAM, maybe a GF3Ti
and probably a new power supply.

What he wants to know is, the computer comes with it's own install disk. This contains not only a version of win98, but also programs for his DVD-ROM and CDR. He wants to know if, when we swap out the mobo, cpu, etc. if we can reinstall the programs/drivers for his DVD-ROM and CDR. Or if there will be problems.

Yes this is possible.

I may not be as "clean" as he want it but it will do...

My Recommendation for him, if he getting a new HD, is just to plug in the hd using the HP part install the "factory recovery disc" and then swap out everything
and delete the enum reg key

The recovery disk for the HP Pavillion that my brother has contains a single large file and it's incripted (spelling?)

this is a Pentium 233 soc 7 with win95.

when he wanted to do a clean install of Win98 i looked for drivers for the sound card, modem and internet keyboard on hp's website and instead of drivers they had instuctions on how to use the recovery cd to install the drivers.

it worked but was a pain.

good luck.
