Upgrading an HP Pavilion.......... this work?

Insidious

My friend wants to upgrade the video on his HP Pavilion 8770c. (Athlon 833/100)

I poked around and found that it has a motherboard with an AGP slot (2.0 compliant, but

only 1X/2X)

So, to try and see what it could do, I took my rig (see below) and set the BIOS for 2X, turned off fast writes and cranked

down my speed to match his.

He wants to get a GF4 Ti4400 now and then upgrade his MoBo and CPU a bit later. (No, I don't know why he doesn't just wait until

he can do it all at once..... )

I have a 300Watt PSU for him to make up for the 185Watt POS that HP provides.

So my question is......... What is your opinion of this test? Is it relevant/representative of what he will see with his upgrade?

What else should I look into for him to see if the GF4 will run on his system?

🙂Some mobos that will enable a 1.5v vid card to fit in agp slot will still only support 3.3voltage and will fry your vid card.

OUCH!

I'm glad you mentioned that.

I knew there was an Intel based MoBo that would do that. This one is AMD 751 based (don't even know if that is relevant here tho)

I guess I need suggestions on how to find out he can load the card. suggestions of resources to check?

PS: thx for the warning !
