Upgrading AMD processors

Hi,

Can anyone point me to information that I could use to figure out what my upgrade options are for my computers that have AMD processors.

For example, Intel has their Processor Spec Finder which makes it easy to find out which of their CPUs go with which socket types, what chipsets support what, etc.

Does AMD have something equivalent to this?

Thanks! :)

Fair enough. :)

I'm wanting to upgrade these two machines:

Laptop - Compaq Presario 722US
1.1 Ghz Duron processor
(full specs are here)

PC - whitebox
Athlon Thunderbird processor running @ 1.2 ghz
Mobo: Octek Rhino KT133A-ASP

Also, please let me know *how* you figure it out so I know for next time.

Well the fastest socket A processor AMD made that would run on the Kt133 chipset was the t-bird 1.4, and the Duron ended at about 1.3 I think. Laptops quite often can't be upgraded, and the other one is not a worhtwhile upgrade. Build a new box, and just move over anything that is compatable (hard driver, cdrom, floppy, maybe video)

@Kiwi, thanks for the link!

@Markfw900, I figured as much. The PC is a box that sits in the corner collecting dust and I was just curious if I could upgrade it. The laptop actually isnt mine, its someone else's, and I was wondering if I could upgrade it for them. I guess not.

Thanks for the help.

The OM DID say it was KT-133A, and my Gigabyte ZXE's did both take the next generation of AMD cpu's. The Version 1.0 stopped with the Palomino, the version 2 managed with Thoroughbred A's (it's still running, has an XP-2200 in it now). I never paid a lot of attention to the Durons, though.

I agree that going from 1.4 to 1.8 or so (stock speed) isn't a huge boost, although the extra cache helps. However, the T-Birds generated a great deal of heat compared to any AMD cpu's other than the two fastest Bartons (the 400 fsb 3000, and the 3200). I still get plenty of use from the second of my two KT-133A's.
