Upgrading a system with integrated video? How?

My new system has the Intel integrated video card. I am not happy with this and I do have an open PCI-Express X16 slot for a REAL video card. How do I install the new one? I was looking to get the 7800GT soon so I wanted to know. Do I have to disable the integrated video somehow or when I put in the new vid card will it just override it automatically? Any help would be nice. Thanks guys.

yep, disable the onboard graphics in the bios, insert your new card, bootup and install the drivers.

might need driver cleaner but I'm unsure since this is IGP.

It depends on the board. I have a 945G system, and if you plug in a PCIe card, it automatically disables the onboard anyway, out of the box. (MSI Neo-F)

This would be a new Intel P4 3.0ghz system. I am hoping that by putting it in it will automatically disable it. I have no idea about the BIOS thingy...

It will override it automatically in AGP or PCI-E slots. If not, and you don't know what the "BIOS thingy" is, I'm sure you could find out how to do so by searching these forums.

Great thanks. Now I am not so worried. Do you know if this will also work with sound cards also? I would think so but I could be wrong.

Before you buy that video card..you say that your mobo has onboard video which leads me to believe this maybe a proprietary system, as in Dell, HP, etc? If so, is your power supply capable of handling a high end video card?

You would be correct. The system is from Gateway. It arrives tomorrow. I will have to open it up to find out how many watts the PSU is. I will let you know. I was hoping to be able to put in a 7800GT in a couple of months but I know they are demanding.

the 7800gt is no where near as demanding as last generation. You might be ok as long as your 350w or above.

The box arrived today and it states that its the Intel 915G chipset. No idea what that means but I am going over to the Intel site right now to look it up. Thanks guys.

A p4 3.0ghz processor would bottleneck your 7800gt. What resolution would you be running games at AA/AF?
