Hello.
I decided to upgrade the power supply fan on my old Emachines to see if I could do it.
I originally thought that the fan was a 80mm low profile fan because that's what it looked like hanging off the bottom of the Emachines PS. So.. I ordered a low profile Panaflo L1a from Gizzo to replace the fan.
Well.. I got the PS apart and half of the stock PS fan was sticking inside of the PS. It has the square area on the outside and then a round area that fits on the inside.
I'm thinking now that this Panaflo L1a might not be enough fan for this PS. What do you think? My guess is that it's a 145 w PS. The fan fits on the underside and blows air directly onto the PS and then it exits at a 90 degree angle out the rear. Those of you that have ever worked on Emachines or Micro ATX cases will know what I'm talking about.
The other thing that I noticed is that the Panaflo is ever so slightly smaller than the cutout so there are a couple gaps about 1 mm in size on the edges of where the fan meets the PS casing. Do I need to fill in these gaps with some sort of compound? You know.. Sort of a vacuum thing. There are other holes on the bottom of the PS, so I don't think it's air tight. I don't know how air tight of if I need a complete seal around the edges of the fan and the mating surface to make the fan effective.
I also have a question about the wire connection. The stock fan has a two pin connector and attaches to the ciruit board of the PS much the same way a 3 pin fan connects to a mobo fan header. I decided not to cut the original wire on the original fan to use this two pin connector in case I have to put the original fan back on the PS. Where would I find a two pin connector for my Panaflo so I can just hook the Panaflo up the same way without mutilating the original fan?
Last question. The original fan has arrows on it to show the air flow, but I'm not sure which direction the Panaflo's direct air. Does anyone know for sure?
Thanks so much!
Sal
