Upgrading a phone to a newer model while still under warranty?

One of my friends has an iPhone 3. The sound is half broken on it and won't mute when the button is pressed. She's still under warranty until November, but she's a little Apple fangirl and is all sparkly-eyed for the iPhone 4. Is there a way for her to cash in her warranty, which she'll do regardless, and get an iPhone 4 instead? I'm sure the swap wouldn't be free, but she's willing to pay a small amount.

This.

I did this very thing with my Droid in March. It was having some minor issues, so I got a new one, sold it on eBay, and then bought a new phone.

The 3GS out of contract will grab a decent chunk of change... especially since it will be new or at least newly refurbished from warranty. It would be worth even more if it was unlocked, but I'm assuming she has it fully upgraded so that isn't an option. She could at least jailbreak it ahead of time and advertise it that way. I'll bet she could get more for the phone than an iphone 4 will cost with contract.

Thanks for the info, guys. Hers is a 3G, not a 3GS. Does that make a difference?

As said, only a little in price. There's still quite a market for them. I assumed you meant 3GS because you said she has an "iPhone 3" in the OP and that was the 3rd gen iphone. Guess you just missed a couple letters or something though.

Oh, I don't know. I'm not an iPhone user so I didn't know the terminology they use.
