I was posting a bit about this a month or so ago - and I just got back from my semester abroad, so now its finally time to get to the upgrade.

Here's the recap:

My current system is
P4 3.06 HT with an XP120 on it
Radeon 9700 pro
2x512 PC 3200 corsair I think (anyone know how I can check on my memory?)
Dell 2001FP LCD monitor.

I'm not sure what my PSU is. Mine broke a while ago and I replaced it with something a friend gave me. Its see-through and has a blue fan in it...so I dont imagine its of the "stable serious PSU" variety. tee hee.

Now, I do alot with my computer - lots of photo editing, also I'll be editing my sisters wedding video this coming semester. But of course, I also game alot. I've been a way for a while, so I need to get back into things. I'm thinking about trying GuildWars, and I also want to play Quake4, F.E.A.R. (if my woosy butt can take it), SS2, and others. Last semester I was playing HL2 on this system and it did pretty well, but I had to dumb things down. Warcraft3 actually never played very well when I zoomed in on battles, and Chronicles of Riddick was a bit shaky as well.

I've got about $700-$800 to spend. I know the video card has to go, but things get complicated, because I've got an AGP setup, and I dont really want to buy an AGP card at this point since PCI-E is the way to go. I also know that at some point I want to switch to an AMD system, but I'm not sure if I need to get rid of my P4 3.06 yet. What do you all think? Is it possible to upgrade vid. card/mobo/cpu and maybe memory for around $800? I dont want to break the bank account here, but I'm probably going to be using this system for a good 2 years, so I dont want to skimp either.

Bless me with your wisdom oh knowledgable nerds of the web!

for $800, you can build a pretty decent AMD based gaming rig. :) i wouldn't bother dumping money into that intel rig.

suggestions? I've already got a case (lanboy), optical drives, sound card, etc. What I need is Mobo, GPU, Mem., Processor, and a new 200-300g HDD.

If you want to bump up to a dual core cpu, you'll have to drop the 7800 GT and get a 6800 GS to fit an $800 budget. But then you can always sell off what you have now and increase your budget.

there are a lot of threads about what parts to buy. search for some build from there. when you're done, list the parts and we'll evaluate.
