Upgrading a P4 2.4 533 worth it?

I was thinking of dropping a 3.02 HT into my Asus P4533-E.

The new chip is ~$250, the old might sell for ~$130.

I'm not sure if the 25% faster CPU will be noticable, but I do a lot of encoding (DVDshrink) and some games. Wait 6+ months and aim for 100% improvment?

If you are buying "just" to encode with DVDshrink I'd say save your money. When I started using shrink I had a 1700XP, now I'm using a 2.8C and the difference isn't that much from start to finish time wise.

Short answer - no! Just O/C your 2.4 to about 2.7 or so.

i have a p4 2.26 533 and i was thinking about this a month ago..
i figured it wasnt worth it.. My computer is still good for another 2-3 years..
I built a few 3.06ghz a few weeks ago, and their's not that much difference if you're just going to use it for basic operations..
Your computer is fast enough for any games now and the future; you just need a fast GPU.

I'm waiting for the next Intel cpu hehe.

2.4b's should get pretty close to 3GHz on an OC (18x166)...
With good quality components and cooling.

Mine will do a tad over 3GHz with my Alpha and a little voltage bump.
I'd say stay safe on your OC and just go as far as you can (stable), at default voltage. ;)

I suggest u just overclock it and purchase a nice fan and install it because Pentium 5 is arriving within 6 months and I suggest you wait for that.

There isnt going to be a pentium 5 that soon. The new cores will still be p4., plus you are more then likely to need a new motherboard to even run it.
