Upgrading a laptop processor ?

Has anyone ever upgraded a laptop processor? I have an ibm thinkpad with a celeron 600/100fsb and was considering upgrading the processor. Has anyone ever done this ? I was thinking of installing a 800 celeron or perhaps a 700 PIII

I believe that celeron runs at 66MHz which would eliminate using any 100MHz fsb cpus on that motherboard!
even if it was possible, there are other considerations such as heat & power consumption to think of.

Mobile Celeron 600s do operate at 100MHz FSB.

Generally mobile processors are not upgradeable by the end user. Upgrading a mobile processor changes the thermal management characteristics of a laptop, as well as affects battery life.

Dont really care too much about battery life, the only consideration would be heat, the 800mhz celeron is 1.65v which i dont think is much different to mine. I dont think it would effect the thermal management too much as at the moment the fan only cuts in occasionaly, so a slightly hotter processor would just cause the fan too run constantly i think.

As above, mobile processors are generally not upgradeable by the end user. Have you ever seen mobile processors on sale?

They are a completely different form factor to desktop processors: either microBGA/PGA, or TCP/MMC (Tape Carrier Package incorporating part of the Chipset's North Bridge). You won't be able to drop in a desktop processor.

Many laptops let you get at your processor and remove it, so you could replace it if you got another one. There are also a lot of laptops that don't let you remove the processor.

A quick look at pricescan.com and pricegrabber.com show mobile P3s up to 850MHz available to buy, and Egghead has mobile Celerons retail boxed listed up to 700MHz, but they don't seem to be in stock right now.
