Upgrading a i5-2310?

I was just wondering if there was any point in upgrading to a i5-3570K.
I noticed that the 2310 struggles in BF 3 MP and some other CPU intensive games, thus bottlenecking my 7950.

I would also overclock the 3570K to about 4.5GHz. So, would I be wasting money doing the upgrade?

If you sell your current i5, no, it won't be a waste of money. You can probably get 75% of the value of the 3570k by selling your current chip.

I'd say go for it, a 50% increase in performance is nothing to laugh at. Do you already have a Z-series motherboard?

Many P-series boards never received a bios update to allow overclocking on Ivy Bridge chips. It will run correctly but there's a good chance you won't be able to overclock... in which case it might actually be better to get a 2500k as it will be fully supported, and crank that up to 4.5+.

Yuriman brings up an interesting point. You might even want to search for a used i7-2600K, I've seen them on occasion here on the forums for prices similar to a new 3570K.

what is the highest OC you can get out of the 2310? it's like 3.5GHz for 4 cores loaded right? (29+1+4x for the multi and 103MHz bclk would get you there)

I think you could easily get 30% more with some 2500K...
but perhaps the 2600K idea makes more sense.

You should get 8 threads at minimum, imho.

Else your only relying on clockspeed for increases - and we know the core itself won't be used 99% in BF3 and similar.

That's the reason i'm upgrading to a haswell i7 atleast.
(Barring that it doens't suck in OC without delidding and other fancy stuff).

2600k does seem the most perf/price option rather than a 3770k and betting on bios.
If you need a new mobo for ivy, Haswell might be a better choice alltogether.
