Short and sweet, what should I upgrade to from my current GeForce? It's the Hercules Guillemot Prophet, one of the early generation, I've had it for almost 2 years. It's still working fine, but I want to put it in my wife's computer, her Voodoo3 seems to be crapping.

I want to get a substantial boost in performance, but I'm also a cheap SOB.

the rest of the system that matters:
Duron 900
Asus A7A266
512 MB Crucial DDR2100
Cybervision C-70 17" (will do 1024x768 32 bit without crapping but no more)
Win Me (yeah I know)

I figure those are the specs that matter.

A Voodoo3 to a Geforce256 chipset........not that big of an improvement, but still, an improvement. Especially with the latest drivers. Although you should be careful, switching display drivers can be tricky. I'd suggest a fresh format and install but if you don't wanna do that make sure you uninstall the display driver for the Voodoo3 first (and boot into VGA mode) and then install the nVidia card.

Oops managed to mis-post.

Both computers will be the recipients of reformatting and clean installs, her computer tends to freeze occasionally, we think it's a driver conflict, and that Voodoo has required a lot of wrestling to make it admit that it works.

The question is, what should I upgrade my GeForce DDR to these days without breaking the bank?

Thanks,

well, how much is breaking the bank for you? you could get a geforce3 ti200 for about $150, or a radeon8500LE for about $180. if you don't want to spend that much, then i would suggest an OEM radeon 7500 (make sure that it is decently clocked, as a lot of the OEM 7500's are clocked very low) or a geforce2 ti. those can be had from 100-$130, more or less. even cheaper than that are the geforce2 gts-v or the radeon le for about $60 each. those would all give increases over your geforce DDR. you could always check in the for sale forums here for a decent vid card. i think there are some geforce2 GTS's selling in the $70 range. a geforce2 GTS would be a great upgrade for you at that price.
