Upgrading a computer

I have built a new computer, but would like to use the HD from my old computer without having to do with a clean install of the OS(XP) and programs. The HW configuration on the old and new computers are different.
If I take the old HD,install in the new computer and boot from it,will I be ok?Can I install all of the required software for the new board in the new computer,i.e chipset, wireless, etc on top of the old HD or this a recipe for problems?
I really don't want to do a clean install of the OS unless absolutely necessary. Can anyone give me any suggestions?Thks

You can do what you are asking, but you will have to drop the XP disc into the drive and have it repair the install. XP ties itself to the motherboard of the system that it is installed upon. So sometimes if you are replacing a dead mobo, XP will be fine, so long as the new mobo is the same chipset, manufacturer, model.. that sort of thing. Do you have another drive in the system? If so, i would recommend that you do a clean install onto it, and then use the old OS drive as a place to grab your old files from. You will have a much smoother system that way.

Its hit or miss. I got lucky recently and went from an AMD X2 mobo with an ULI chipset to an Intel Core 2 Duo with a P35 chipset and surprisingly I popped in my drive and it went all the way to login and all I had to do was install the new mobo drivers. I was very happy, but I did plan to do a full reinstall, just in case.

I am going from an ASUS P5WDH to an ASUS Striker-Nvidia 680i- big change I believe!
I have a second HD where I have a mirror copy of my main HD.
So if I understand correctly-take current main HD,do a clean install of XP with the new MB and then import key files from my backup-mirror HD.
Question is if and how I can import complete programs and their settings from the backup HD or am I just limited to personal files i.e. music, pictures, videos etc... Again I would not like to spend days reinstalling programs and their updates.
Thks

I agree... my last two builds, old HD work (from and older comp), no issue whatsoever, both AMD boards and processors. I would give it a try, nothing to lose...
