Upgrading a BH6...Celeron 1GHz or PIII 800??

I know this topic has been covered many times, but I want to know the performance measurements behind it. I get the pleasure of upgrading my parent's computer over the holidays. They have my old BH6 with a 300A overclocked to 464. They managed to get in on the deal with the GeForce 3 Ti 200 at BB (the same with me), but now they want a faster CPU to go along with it. They do a lot of things with it. My mom is just a normal user (i.e. word processing, web, etc), while my dad is game player (UT, Ghost Recon, etc). I know the PIII 800's are more expensive, but would it be worth the price to go with them, or do you think a Celeron 1GHz would be enough??

C1000 is a better deal. They should perform similarly. I run a C1000 on a BH6 overclocked to 1120 in my kids PC with a GF2 GTS. It runs very well. With a Ti200 it will be very nice.

Actually you'll be surprised that the P!!!800EB will run much better with the GeForce3 Ti200 than with the overclocked Celeron. The front-side bus of the P!!! will supply the Ti200 with much more system overhead to work with. I have no reasonable answers as to why but larger L2 caches make a huge difference in GeForce-family performance.

Ok, but remember the PIII I'd be getting would probably be on a 100 MHz bus. The BH6 will only accept a 133 bus if you want to overclock the PCI and AGP bus, which I probably don't want to do. There is also a stick of 128 MB of PC100 RAM. I'm getting them an additional of 256 MB of PC133 Cas 3

If you have a BH6 rev 1.0x, there is no 1/4 PCI divider. 133 FSB is 44 PCI. Not a good idea. 112 FSB is a good setting for a BH6. Gets you a little more FSB speed, more CPU MHz, and the PCI bus is @ 37.5 which is not too far out of spec.

where is a good place to get the slockets ? i have 2 bh 6's rev 1.0x's that could benefit so much from something better than the 300/333mhz celerons in them right now.

thanks

Alrighty then, if you cannot do 133fsb then jump on the 1.0GHz Celeron and bump it to 112fsb. The 800MHz P!!! is still the better deal for using with the GeForce3 Ti200, but make up for the difference by cracking RC5 for Team Anandtech!

btw - Local stores often still have old stock SLOTKETs on hand. You may be able to find one in the local chop shop near you.

Slockets are getting hard to find. The recent cheap higher MHz Celerons have a lot of people upgrading their old Slot 1 boards. Mwave has some that people have had good luck with.

Ok, I think I'm just going to go with a Celeron 1GHz and overclock it a little. It should be good for my parents without spending to much.
