Upgrading a 9800 Pro to a 6600GT

My current rig is an aging P4 2.0C with a Radeon 9800 Pro Ice-Q, and I'm thinking about selling the 9800 Pro and getting a Geforce 6600 GT instead.

2 questions:

1: I know that these two cards perform pretty similar in certain games, but that in others the 6600 GT is about 50% faster. Considering my relatively slow CPU, will I be able to notice any of this speed increase at all?

2: I'm planning on getting the Leadtek AGP version of the 6600 GT, as it should have a pretty quiet fan. Now, I don't expect it to be as quiet as the fan on my Ice-Q (which is rated about 20db), but do you think the difference will be noticeable once it's in the closed case (which is sitting on my desk, btw)?

Keep the 9800Pro and try find a cheap 2.6c P4 and overclock to 3.2 - 3.4ghz if your motherboard lets you if not just buy a 3.2northwood. You will benifit more.

Inspector Jihad, I saw in another thread that you just got the Leadtek AGP 6600 GT, how would you rate it's fan noise?

If you ARE going to buy a 6600GT, then you might want to consider the Gigabyte VP model. It is fanless, so it is absolutely silent. As a bonus, it also ships with faster memory (1120MHz vs 1000MHz).

Im no computer expert, but I did stay at the holiday inn express last night.

Go for a 6800nu. Look up articles, video card bottlenecks on CPU arent THAT much, you'll lose maybe 10FPS compared to a 3.2gh'

I would actually reccomend an MSI for your 6600GT, as it is quietier than the Leadtek (I've treid both). Its heatsink also covers the ram, and it can be easily OC'ed form 500/1000 to 600/1200. Plus it has VIVO and a kickass software bundle.

I dont recommand this upgrade. If you game in 1024x768 most of the time, you wont notice a difference(except maybe in doom3 )

Hey imagine that, i upgrade from a 9800 pro to a 6800gt and i still think i didnt got enough for the money i invest in the 6800gt.Sure youll see a little difference, but with the system you got, keep the 9800 pro and upgrade if you can instead the CPU to something close to 3ghz, better upgrade imo

QFT.

6600 GT is simply not worth the upgrade.

I went from a 9600SE clocked at 400/585 to a 6800 to a 6800GT. Let me tell you, going jsut from the 6800 to the 6800GT was a huge difference. I am on a P4 2.8HT and that 256DDR3 mem impacted my gameplay a lot (in a good way). So, in my opinion, just get a 6800GT. They're cheaper nowadays than they were a couple of months ago lol

I don't see any point going from 9800pro to 6600GT. 6600GT is very good (i had one), but not worth the investment from 9800pro. 6800GT would be worth upgrading.

Not even, yes there will be a performance boost but it won't be too significant. Just keep saving your money until you can buy another high end card, then sell your 9800PRo OR you could sell your 9800PRo then get a higher end video card though I would IMO wait for the 512MB cards that are coming around the corner...

definetely not worth the upgrade,... the 6600GT is just a slightly higher performing part...get the 6800GT AGP or X800XL PCIe

I have a leadtek 6600gt. Now, my house is loud, and yes I could hear a difference, but it's really not bad at all. I went from a silent 9200 to this card, and I'd have to say theres not much of a difference. but like i said, my house is loud
