At that price you can just about get a GeForce 9800 GTX+. What I like about those are that most of them exhaust the hot air out the back of the case. The newer models (look for ones that only take one PCIe power plug) are shorter than older ones which may allow them to fit into smaller cases. If these are a bit rich for you, you can go with a GeForce 9800 GT or Radeon 4850.

New graphics cards draw more power, so if your power supply does not have a 6 pin PCIe plug, you'll need to upgrade it.

So you put the 9800 GT near the 4850, like they are equal or something and the 9800GTX+ is their faster brother?

9800GTX+ and 4850 are equal in performance and at the same price level, although I see the Nvidia card a bit more expensive. It's easy to make a choice based on this.

The 4850 that has 100% rear exhaust fansinks have street pricing as expensive as the 9800 GTX+, thus losing that advantage.

Also, the 9800GTX+ is actually faster than 4850 in most games, between 2-20 fps

..and it also supports Physx. Nvidia's drivers are typically more stable as well. If these things are important to you, then the extra $20 or so may be well worth it.

HD4850 or 9800GTX+ for $150

You might find a rebae / used / fleabay deal on a 4870 512 or gtx 260 for ~ $180

as usual the op didnt provide any info about his pc but everybody starts suggesting cards. it might actually help to know more since he could have a freaking single core P4 and 1 gig of ram for all we know.

Same thing I was gonna say. The 7600GT is pretty old, it might not be worth to drop a 4850 in there.

So give us more information, so we can help you!

That is not entirely true. Both camps have their issues with drivers, but problems are fixed in future driver updates. I really don't understand where is all this preconception coming from.

PhysX is not such a great deal, not in a way that it matters when you buy a new videocard. At least, today that is. In the future it will be more important, but right now it's not. It is a bit more then dx 10.1 though. ATi has only Stalker Clear Sky using some dx 10.1 features, Nvidia has Mirror's Edge, some maps in Unreal 3 and the next title Cryostatis.

Man, my mom's cpu has a 7600gt passively cooled, and a athlon 3800x2. That thing is ancient. The passive cooler on it however is the greatest hunk of metal ever.

Here ya go

Although you'll probably see me as an ATi biased person, I don't take for granted those benchmarks from Tomshardware, because you really have no idea what drivers they've used and we all know that a lot of performance has been pumped into these cards over time with newer drivers.

The problem is that I also have difficulties in finding more recent reviews where those two cards are fighting head to head. So, I really don't know, maybe you're right and the GTX+ is a tad faster.

But if I had to choose between them, I'd probably take the 4850, just because their voltmod is so simple and amazing performance gains can be had with that on air.

I am just looking to do a small upgrade to get me through the year.
My mother board is a gigabyte M57SLI-S4 with a Athlon 64 x2 4000.
I may be looking to upgrade the cpu as well but for now just something easy and cheap as I stated above.

well with a stock 4000 X2 even a 9600gt wont be able to perform to its fullest. I used an 8800gt(9800gt) and 9600gt in my 5000 X2 system and there was virtually no performance difference between them. heck those cards could not even give me better minimum framerates in newer games than the 8600gt I was using because of the cpu. I would just get a 9600gt and then get a better card when you upgrade your system. oh and I hope you have 2 gigs of ram or more.

At was resolution? That's an absurd claim.

sorry its not absurd and is a fact. the resolution didnt matter much to me when it came to minimum framerates. I mean if the minimum framerates were already low at 1280 then I didnt worry about a higher res anyway. I spent weeks going through different gpus but then pairing them with other cpus so I know exactly what I am talking about. people can talk theory all they want but I KNOW what it was like and ran benchmarks to prove it. in most games a 8600gt, 9600gt, 8800gt, and a 4670 were all within 1 to 2 frames of each other when it came to minimum framerates. yes the faster cards delivered higher max averages especially at higher res but the minimums were all basically the same. I went ahead and just built this pc because to me there was no point in buying hardware if my minimum framerates didnt improve.

EDIT:
x2 6000 @3.1 for 80.00$ shipped

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16819103272

9800gt 121.00$ and 91.00$ AR

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814500080

Or

hd 3870 for 89.00$ with free shipping.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814102719

170.00$ shipped for a x2 6000 and a 3870 is a great upgrade.

This actually looks like the way to go thanks for the help.
