I'm thinkin about upgrading from 98SE to Win2K. But, I got so much crap on my 98SE install that I really do not want to lose. IIRC, the upgrade installs into \winnt leaving the \windows directory alone. But, I don't remember if all of the programs and settings and stuff all get carried over to Win2K. Anyone know for sure?

Thanks.

good question...did not know it was even possible. I always do a clean install.

Per Microsoft, it is possible to upgrade from various versions of Windows 9x & NT to Win2K. That surprised me when I read it at their site, but there you go. Of course, you're right ausm: a clean install is always the preferred way to go.

Yea, Yea. I know it's the "preferred" way to go. I do the clean install all the time at work.

The upgrade works because Win2K installs into a completely different directory. I know I'll need new drivers for all my hardware, but that's no biggie. It's all the smaller programs that I don't wanna lose.

I guess I'll just have to burn a bunch of data and hope I can migrate it back over to Win2k after I upgrade (Eudora mailbox files, ICQ contact list, WS_FTP accounts, etc).

They are saved. Programs and settings and all that nice stuff. It lost the passwords file for webpages, but that's no biggie. Before beginning the install, it told me about incompatible stuff. 3Com Web Camera, Motherboard Monitor, Vortex2 drivers, and a couple other trivial things were all that were listed. MBM worked after the upgrade, and I just had to download the latest drivers from 3Com's site to get the webcamera to work. Very simple, no drama.

edit: Well, it didn't realize that I had Media Player 7 installed, so I let Windows Update install it again. I was pretty sure that I had installed Office 2K SR-1, but I guess not. Looking at a thread in this forum, I'm gunna steer clear of SP1.
