My friend missed out on both of the laptops he was considering on Black Friday so he finally relented and got a netbook like I had been telling him to do all year. He and I both ordered the blue Acer Aspire One w/Linpus from Newegg for $250 when I told him that there was no sense paying for the 1GB-RAM/120GB-HDD version when I have the hardware he needs to give it more (120GB-HDD+8GB-SSD, 1.5GB-RAM.) for only $33.99. Yeah, I paid $23.99 for WD Scorpio 1200BEVS drives in a WD Passport enclosure on clearance (Best Buy; a year ago) and DDR2 has been routinely seen for $20 for 2GB at Fry's for AGES now.
You see, I had looked online and people had reported that the 120GB AAO sometimes shipped with that exact drive, so I didn't realize fitment would be an issue. We haven't even received our netbooks but I have been looking online and it seems that the casing is slightly different for the 120GB version. The upgrade guides I see all refer to buying a 1.8" ZIF drive and replacing the SSD. Will I be able to force an HDD in there instead? If not, I almost think it would be worth adding eSATA. What other options do I have for upgrading the SSD?
I've been told that the 8GB SSD is not fast enough to comfortably run Windows. What about these: CF+ZIF adapter? SDHC? External USB? Thanks!
