I am running an AMD 3700+ and I just bought an OEM 4400+. Will I need to reinstall Windows XP after installing the new CPU?

Motherboard: GA-K8N Ultra-9
RAM: 2GB Corsair PC 3200
GPU: Quadro FX3450

I once switched from a Duron 1.8 GHz to an Athlon 3200+ with no problem. I think UT2004 even automatically detected that I had a faster CPU and automatically added some extra special effects.

However, if you're switching to a dual core, I don't know if you need the AMD driver or not.

I'd make sure you are running the most current BIOS release for your motherboard. You shouldn't have to reinstall it should be PNP.

When I went from a single core A64 to a dual core Opteron, I did not have to reinstall Windows. I booted up after the upgrade, Windows installed the device, I rebooted, and that was that.

I went from a 3500+ to a X2 3800+ with no problems. Get the dual core drivers from AMD's site.

Lets say I'm going to upgrade from a 3000+venice to a x2 3800+, on a asus a8n5x mobo, what drivers would I have to download ? Cold you give me a link, I can't quite find it. Is there anything else I need to do besides installing those dual core drivers ?

You'll want to upgrade to the latest bios version available for your motherboard to ensure you have support for the processor in your motherboard.

I have allready, but it doesn't mention x2 support anywhere. The mobo comes with a logo saying it supports x2's though, so I reckon it supports x2's out of the box. But theres a dual core thingy for windows xp or vista, right ? And I have to do something in the settings ? I've told people about it myself, but I forgot lol ...

Ah wait I found where it says it now supports x2's like the one I bought. Now the question though, do I need to change any settings in windows xp, or windows vista as soon as I drop the new CPU in the mobo ?

Have you installed the x2 yet? My opteron 180 arrived today so I'm anxious to hear about upgrades.

No, it's ordered, and hopefully ships 2morrow, and I'll either have it saturday, or hopefully monday/tuesday next week. I've ordered a arctic freezer pro 64 as well. My mobo atm seems to crap out at 275fsb, yes I know, that's not a lot. But with the 10 multiplier of the x2 3800+ I should be able to hit 2.6ghz +, which will be fine for me. My current venice is running at 2.4ghz, so to 2.6ghz won't be that much of an improvement, clockspeed wise, but I multitask so much nowadays, a dualcore will be a blessing.

And let me know how well your opty performs, I'm curious as well !

I'll be happy to hit 3 ghz, ecstatic at 3.2.

I think that 2.6 on a dual core is a huge improvement over 2.4 single core. I even think that my work computer (3600+ brisbane at 2.251) is an improvement over my home fx55 at 2.88 for my usage pattern here. At home I'm just using the opteron as a temporary until jul 22. At that point I will pass the opteron down to my wife for her file server and give my mom the fx55. It's kind of scary thinking about my mom with an fx55. Imagine getting fragged by your own mother!

I plugged it in, xp pro recognized the new processor, I rebooted, and it's working. Now for the overclocking...

my upgrade didn't go too smoothly since I fried the mobo. It did work for about 10 hrs before killing it, however.
