Upgrading 2x560ti to 7970?

Hello, I'm wondering if I'd see a decent increase going from 2x2gb 560ti sli to the Asus matrix platinum 7970?

I want rid of SLI due to the noise/heat but I'm willing to OC the 7970 as long as it doesn't get too hot/noisy.

Tbh, I've put down a (refundable) deposit for the R9 290X, but if the 7970 gave a decent enough boost I 'd rather save the money on the 290X and spend it on something else (like games). The Asus Matrix Platinum is ~£250

PS. I game at 1080p.

Going strictly off Anandtech's Bench, it looks like it would be worthwhile, especially if you sold your old cards:

In some cases the 7970Ghz is 2.5x faster than a single 560ti, so even with perfect SLI scaling you'd be getting a 25% boost in framerates in those titles.

OP firstly SLI scaling can vary from game to game. in best cases its close to 1.9x. in others its less than 1.5x . in few games like Company of Heroes 2 there is no multi GPU support. on average SLI scaling is around 1.6x.

here is an old GTX 560 Ti SLI review

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GeForce_GTX_560_Ti_SLI/23.html

In the latest games like BF4 , Farcry 3, Crysis 3, Tombraider a stock HD 7970 Ghz at 1050 mhz is 2x - 2.5x the speed of a GTX 560 Ti. The gap widens at highest settings with MSAA 4x or SSAA 2x

http://gamegpu.ru/action-/-fps-/-tps/far-cry-3-v-102-test-gpu.html

then comes the added performance. ASUS HD 7970 Matrix is clocked at 1100 mhz. a conservative 1175 mhz overclock puts you at 10% faster than stock HD 7970 Ghz. but if you get lucky with a golden chip you could go even upto 1300 mhz and a 20% perf increase over stock HD 7970 ghz.

sell the GTX 560 Ti 2GB for 90 - 100 bucks each and spend the extra money on the ASUS HD 7970 Matrix platinum. its worth every penny.

Thanks guys.

Would a i5-2500k @ 4.5GHz bottleneck this card?

Also, if I decided to CF in the future, do you know if 2 would fit in an Asrock Z68 Extreme4 Gen3 mobo? I assume they'd be cooler/quieter than the 560ti's?

Yes you could fit two 7970's on a Z68 Extreme4. I doubt it'll come to that though. You'd also need a 750W PSU.

A 7970 consumes more power than a 560 Ti, so cooler design notwithstanding, a 560 Ti should run cooler and quieter, on average.

If I were you I'd wait a bit until the new cards are released and see how prices on 79xx react

I don't think the 7900 prices will get any lower. They just lowered again... any lower and they will be free... or negative margin for AMD.

OP buy one now while they are still available. They are considered clearance now.

I tend to agree w/Rvenger. The 7950 cards are, IMHO, an even bigger bargain with lots of overclocked examples running at, or near, the 7970's.

While I think you'd have a better setup, I wouldn't waste my time personally. 2x560ti is still a very strong setup at 1080p... maybe wait for a deal on a 290x.
