I ended up with the HP dv6103nr from best buy last friday, and I'd like to at least add some ram to it. I read over quite a few threads here, and I think the following will work. I just want to make sure I'm not missing something.

PNY 512MB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Notebook Memory Model N512X53OPT - Retail

I also read in one of the threads that you should be able to swap out the processor, however I cant find that thread now. I wouldnt do that for awhile regardless, but if and when I do, what should I be looking at? Totally new to laptops, so any info would help.

I'd get 2GB

Did you get that notebook for $379?

It might be upgradeable depending on if the motherboard supports it

In the other thread people said it should be possible depending upon chipset, etc, but I dont remember any of and I cant find it. Like I said, this wouldnt be something I'd do tomorrow, just maybe in the future after the warranty is gone. I tore apart some Playstations back in the day and soldered in some mod chips, so I'd imagine its something I can handle if I read up on it.

I'd get 2GB

It was $379 but I had to pay someone $75 for the ticket, so it was $454. 2GB eh? I dont even have 2 GB in my desktop. :) I get where you're coming from, but this will be an easy $35 boost, nothing crazy.

How about you get a 1GB stick so later on if you want to you can upgrade to 2GB just getting another 1GB stick? guessing it has 512MB now and you want to put another 512MB for a total of 1GB.

Honestly its something I never even considered until you brought it up. I havent reached a point where I feel I need it on my other pc so I was just going to go to 1GB and call it a day. Would it make a lot of difference?

I upgraded my 2 year old HP dv1000 by replacing a pair of 512s with a pair of 1 GB SODIMMs. The difference was not dramatic, but noticeable. Amore noticeable difference was replacing the 80 GB HDD with a 160 GB HDD. And I replaced the internal sound system with an external (USB) Audigy 2 NX. That was a HUGE difference when connected to a good speaker system.
