Upgrades for SickBeast

Heya SickBeast, you are looking to mod/upgrade your civic but don't know what to do? Here is a thread for serious suggestions only. When I got my wife her 2005 Civic EX 5 years ago, I was forced to upgrade components to survive her driving habits.

1. Upgraded rotors to performance slotted
- My wife is a crazy driver who likes to brake really hard all the time. And she complained about fade. After the 3rd set of rotors and pads gone bad, I swapped them out with performance rotors and pads and flushed fluid. Since then, no fade from her crazy driving habits, stopping distance has improved and rotor life has gone up exponentially.

2. Bright LED dome light
- The stock was pretty dim so I swapped them out for a very bright LED light.

3. Summer tires
- We live in norcal so weather is almost always good, these tires help when wife wants to take that corner at 30mph over safe limit.

IIRC the Civic doesn't generally have a problem with the brakes fading due to pads or rotors, it's the brake fluid boiling. You're wife is an insane driver if she can cause fade on the road. In fact, she probably should not be driving.

Summer tires will be a big upgrade in grip and could make driving more fun. Intelligently chose suspension mods might be nice as well, it's something you can feel, they make a legitimate difference, and depending on the component choice may lower the car a bit for a more sporty look.

Personally, I think he should make whatever modifications he wants for appearance and comfort. Trying to (legitimately) increase the performance beyond what it comes with is a costly proposition in that type of car.

Not a call-out thread IMO, seemed like he actually wants to help the guy.

You forgot inflate to sidewall, how the hell did you forget the #1 expert-recommended car upgrade?

I just bought an air compressor for the trunk of my car so that I can maintain full sidewall pressure at all times and don't have to rely on filling stations to maintain my performance stance. I highly recommend this option.

Wow, Honda engineers must be real idiots to design an airbox which robs the engine of around 10% max power. Overdesigning everything BUT the airbox, what were they thinking?

When any old yokel with a hacksaw can fix such obvious, simple and glaring design flaws in your vehicles it's time to fire your engineering staff and institute an unqualified basement dweller recruitment program.

Looking at that icebox thread makes me wonder where the checks are in their engineering. Something you should be wary of SickBeast is how easy it is for water to get into the modified intake, especially if you encounter a good-sized puddle. I would prefer that mod to stick closer to the bumper by another 2-4 inches really.

I also recall some magazine (Import Tuner?) taking an older Integra and modding it so they could consistently hit 40mpg and also make more power. They were pretty successful in their endeavors and ended up turbo'ing the motor.

And if I were modifying a Civic, I would likely start with a good suspension package. In my case you can take the sway bars off certain Celebrities or U-Vans and get a very nice bump in handling for around $70.

LOL

Even if this is a callout I like it.

Thanks for the rotor suggestion, OP.

Hey I found this "icebox" mod. It looks messy and a little complicated, but they dynoed a Civic Si and it gained 14 horsepower.

Part of me wants to do this, but then 99% of the ATG tells me to leave my car stock. :hmm:
On the internet everything gains 14 horsepower to a Civic. 14 horsepower at the wheels.

When I clicked the link I actually thought it would be of a small ice box on the engine compartment with a tube running through it to cool the air before it hits the intake.

Blame USA smog laws. Tons of things are there to meet the smogs standards that rob power.

#1 is due to late breaking. This is a bad habit if one is the driver is not aware of the stopping distance of the vehicle.

LED interior lights are a nice upgrade.

Better tires are another item but wait for the ones on the car to be done with. Or pick up a set of lightweight wheels and tires maybe go +1 or +2 on stock size. Dont go running 19's on a civic.

you can add fog-lights to it if your bored.

I just came back for the track and i saw a group of 8th gen civic Si's 3 sedans and 1 coupe... all running mid 14's
