Upgraded to X2 4200+, now PSU fan runs full speed

Went from a 3500+ to the X2 4200+. Now my PSU fan runs very fast and loud. The case fan is designed to be plugged into the PSU and adjusted by the same thermal controller. It too is running very fast. The middle of the fan is quite warm actually.

I miss my quiet computer!

Any ideas?

i think the x2 is taking more power or loading up the psu more making the psu generate more heat. If you want a quieter psu buy a new one. I would suggest seasonics. Does your sonata have an sp-500 or sp450?

You could also try undervolting your CPU (if it is indeed a power draw problem).

It probably is all down to the extra power required for dual-core - as you have a fairly high-end graphics card as well, it's probably pushing the PSU more to the limit - I'm pretty sure the amps on the first Sonata with the truepower 380watt you have are only around 22amps on a single 12volt rail, so while it's good for average use, dual-core CPU and high-end graphics are just a little to much for it.

As said, something like a Seasonic, or if you prefer Antec, the Antec Phantom 550watt (hybrid fan), would be nice quiet choices.

The fan is spinning harder as there is more current draw from the PS. You are about at the limit of the PS at this point, but unless the noise is bothering you or you plan on OC'ing, I'd let it go as it's probably fine. I would monitor my 12v and 5v rails to see how much of (if any) a dip they take when you play a game or load the system hard.

Thanks for your great replies. The 380s has been a great PSU for me, but I need to shut this thing up, it drives me nuts. I had been looking at the Phantom 500 on zipzoomfly. I think thats what A554SS1N was thinking of. I wanted the Neo HE 550, but it seems to be a bit low on the 5v rail I think it was. Known to be a problem for the A8N-SLI series.

The reviews I have read for the Phantom 500 are impressive and it sounds like the one for me.

** I have enabled cool n quiet and even when the CPU is at 45%, no change in PSU/Case fan speed. Should that be expected?
