The good ol' USA.

The 2008 census reported the medium income as $50,233. The PewResearch Center suggests that the middle income range is 75 percent to 150 percent of the median income. This would make the middle class income range $37,675 to $75,350.

$37,675 will barely pay for just housing in many cities such as New York and Chicago

It's $8,000 to $13,000 just for taxes for an ordinary ranch house here.

Years ago my boss pulled out his green Amex card and I pulled out my gold Amex. He asked "You have a Gold Amex?" I replied "You should know, you paid for it".

It was on my expense report and if I was still flying the way I did then Id have the new one and they would have paid for it. My $450??? No way.

EDIT: OK, just noticed that this was an old thread.

I want an AMEX for bragging rights, but shit, that thing is expensive to me and the merchants. I use my Visa for everything and already feel bad for sub-$10 purchases. Oh well, AXP makes me happy:).

I think platinum was worth it back when they were doing free companion fare. AFAIK, they don't do that anymore.

And $37,675 will buy you a huge house in the middle of Detroit. What is your point? You made the comment that 60k wasn't middle class by saying "What country". I showed you statistical data that shows 60k is indeed smack in the middle of "middle class" in the USA. Are you too dense to realize that the median household income for those areas is going to be greater than in areas where the cost of living is less? Of course NYC is going to cost more, but the general population makes more than someone in middle area.

Anyways, lets not derail this thread.

As already mentioned the companion tickets are nice, but the big benefit of the platinum card is airport club access. This is normally around $300 / year or $30 per visit, otherwise. Most airport clubs have free wifi, free snacks, free alcohol and are quiet. I used the clubs a lot when i was traveling internationally often and had multi-hour layovers. Now, it's not worth it for a 45 minute layover regardless of how often you fly.

I need to find better rewards, myself, as i'm now charging $40K+/yr on an amex green. When i look at the SPG card i see $1 per point. How is that any better? my platinum upgrade "offer" is only 25K MRs, right now, although i could probably call and ask for more.

The Amex HHonors Surpass card will upgrade you to HHonors Diamond on $40k annual spend. There's an annual fee, but if you stay in hotels a lot, that's a nice benefit.

I have an AMEX Blue card. No fees. In fact, they pay me over $100/year to use it! Heck, last year I may have even hit $200. That's good enough for me.

That's nothing, I have an American Express COSTCO:

All I have to do it merely show it at the door of Costco, and the guard stands down and lets me in the store. It's hard to buy power like that.

So is it safe to assume that the OP is an attention whore who likes to brag about all the money he wastes???

Cash blue is the way to go. FUCK Yea.

If you don't travel, I would say yes, but if you do, or want to, the Amex Green, Gold, and Plat cards are the best because you can transfer the points to airline and hotel programs and get more than a penny a point worth of rewards.

Think I'll stick with my free Visa Signature.

It's pretty good for them paying me to use it.

- Warranty extension
- Concierge
- Zero liability
- No hard spending limit (basically if I can afford it then I can put it on the card NP)

Isn't having a $450/yr card like a status symbol for stupid people?

Gayner has been back 2 days... made about a dozen posts... and half them are insults. you'd think after a 2 month ban... he'd learn.

are we taking bets how long until his next ban?

I got my Qantas AMEX discovery card in the mail today, but only in an envelope. But no annual fee, 1=$1 points and a bonus 20 thousand with my first spend.

Does anybody have a USAA American Express?
Is 9.9 percent a good rate for American Express?

I'm gonna do flashing colors next.
