I just upgraded from a TNT2 M64 to a PNY GeForce 4 TI4200 64 DDR. That?s a huge upgrade for me. One of the other reasons besides the good graphics why I upgraded is because the tnt2 always froze when playing games. I just figured it was old. So I install the ti 4200 and my computer can barely start up without freezing. Sometimes it even freezes at the welcome screen. It also freezes in safe mode. I have the latest drivers, nvidia (40.72) and via 4-in-1 (4.43). Can anyone tell me what?s wrong? I?ve tried loading the best performance and optimized settings in the BIOS and it still freezes up on me. I put my old card back in and it works, back to normal. I need some help. Thanks.

Try going into your BIOS and turning off most of the AGP features. I remember there were some AGP fast write and sidebanding issues w/ my old KT133A board.

Alright I give up. I just finished trying to reinstall windows xp. I reformatted the hd and it keep freezing when the setup is copying files from the cd in the beginning. So I guess I?m gonna go down are exchange the card tomorrow and hop that?s it. Anyone have any thoughts on what?s wrong or had similar problems?

Not to be rude, but returning is would be silly, if his old card crashed too, what is your power supply? It sounds like you need one with more capacity, but maybe not.

Anyway it is probable that you dont have anough power like I said, and if not well return it and make your old one run stable before you get a new one. My tnt2 ultra was a wonderfully stable card.

Yeah, I'm willing to bet the power supply could be to blame. The Ti4200 requires a very substantial increase in power compared to an M64. Don't just tell us the wattage either, find out the manufacturer and make is possible for more detailed specifications. This way it is easier to determine wheter or not the PSU is at fault.

my power supply is a powmax 300W. i even unplugged everything except for the HD and two fans. still the same. and my old card never ever crashed as much as this one. i can barely do anything without the ti4200 crashing. it's definatly either the mobo or graphics card. i'm hoping its the graphics.

are you ocing anything? or maybe its the heat? just a guess

i have mad crashing problem with my old computer and never knew why, until 1 day i found the fockers that sold me the comp. left the tape on the "cooling sticky gum" between the cpu and the cooler, so basically i was getting 0 cooling the entire time. good thing it was only a 700mhz never burned up.

I was building a computer for a friend, and when all the parts came his uncle who is supposed to be knowledgeable put it together for him. The athlon xp 1800+ only runs at 1322 MHz, instead of 1533, or whatever it is supposed to, and I have wondered ever since if the guy did what you said. (yes it was a a retail processor). But I dont want to get involoved b/c know I can say I am innocent since their uncle screwed it.

AMD wont take it back b/c the Abit NV133R is not on their approved MB list which is BS I think.

BTW have you taken the card out and put it in another system?

I remember that the box for my PNY Ti 4200 stated that a 350 watt PSU is recommended. I would try running your computer on a stronger PSU and if that doesn't work, return the card for a Radeon 9000 (preferably) or a GF4 MX 420. Those cards match your rig's specs more closely.
