got it overclocked at 470 core and 1.4ghz mem. is there a mod out there that'll open up pipes for this?

Unfortunately, no. Unwinder, RivaTuner's author, has specifically stated on the Guru3D forums that pipes cannot be unlocked on any 7800 GT/GS models.

I also have a 3.0ghz P4 533mhz FSB but no video card right now. What do people recomend in AGP for this CPU nowadays? Seems some of the high end cards may be overkill for this CPU?

A new 6800GS might be a decent option, especially if you can unlock its pipes to have a defacto 6800gt. Otherwise, there are usually several used X800xt's or 6800gt's that can be bought from reputable traders in the FS/FT forum for somewhere in the range of $200-$230.

Any tips in what to look for in order to unlock its pipes to have a defacto 6800gt?

It is interesting how hard it is to find cards with some sort of software bundle. I hate that.

The BFG 6800GS seems to have pretty good success with unlocking. I know mine unlocked just fine AND I was able to overclock it to GT speeds, so I really do have essentially a 6800GT. I can push the card a bit further, but not too much (415/1130), but it's not really worth stressing the card that much right now. It's fast enough for me.

I have a similar setup and I went with a Radeon X850XT. Some said it would be overkill for my system but the card rocks! I would venture to say that I got at least another year (maybe two) out of my system with this upgrade. It was purchased used from a reputable ebay merchant and the price was right. Check around and you'll find them new for very reasonable prices now. IMHO, this is the way to go for an AGP computer. No unlocking needed to enjoy 16 pipe goodness with raging stock clock/memory speeds.
