I got a 2500k upgraded from a E8400. MSI G43 board.

System posts and runs. I actually used my old hard drive with win 7. Everything seems to run. After an upgrade, what should you do to test it out? Lots of people have told me to do a clean win 7 install after an upgrade. Why is that?

To get rid of all the excess bulk. Old data, software, registry, drivers, etc... I format my HDD every 6 months. After about a year it starts slowing down from bloat.

All too often, the operating system is looking for certain hardware drivers and such...that it doesn't find with the new hardware. Reformatting and a clean install gets rid of those old drivers that you no longer need...and installs the new drivers with no chance of conflict.
Plus, as BAD says, it's a good way to get rid of old, unused "crap" in your HDD.

Very excessive.

Back when i was using XP, I used to reimage back to a baseline install once every 18 months or so. I've only been using Windows 7 for a year - thus far, registry rot seems to be much less minor issue. Based on my experience thus far, I suspect I will not have to reload windows nearly as much as I did with XP.

If you're having to wipe/reinstall Windows every 6 mos, you should invest in a good imaging product to reduce the frequency as well as the lengthy time it takes to reinstall all your favorite apps & such. Furthermore, if you retain a baseline image, restoring that image will greatly cut down on the time it takes to get back up & running.

Windows 7 is alot better at the regurgitation process I call it. I've done it a couple of times and it seems to run OK. I do a full install once my initial upgrade playing around is done tho.

Does task manager show all 4 cores?

I'd suggest doing the show hidden devices trick at least to get rid of the remnants of your last build.

Goto start/accesories/command prompt, right click and choose "run as administrator"
In the command window which opens, type:
Set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 (press enter)
Devmgmt.msc (press enter)
In the Device Manager window which opens click View=>show hidden devices.

This is handy to remove all the superfluous entries such as keyboard, monitor, mouse, hard drive etc which have been redetected. Just rightclick and uninstall any devices which you are sure are not connected anymore.
Be careful not to remove any devices you're not sure about, some of them are meant to be hidden, are used by Windows and will cause big troubles if removed. The main purpose of this is to remove multiple entries of devices which have been unplugged and then plugged back in to a different port, eg. Mouse, keyboard.

I've done this many times and have never roached a windows install yet....By doing this at least 🙂

Start at the top and work your way down 1 section at a time. The old install ones will be greyed out.

These one's just leave as they pop up or will cause issues
Network Adapters ---> RAS Async Adapter
Non-Plug and Play Drivers ---> Fs_Rec
Sound, Video, and Game controllers ---> Anything that's grey out and starts with Microsoft

Some people frown on doing this as if a person gets carried away and starts deleting everything windows will not be bootable. If you happen to be color blind I could see how this could happen.
