Upgraded my CPU and need advice on cooling

So like the title says, I upgraded from the 3000+ to the X2 4200+. I'm using the stock cooler that came with the 3000+ and the temp of the cpu was reaching the high 60s when I was playing Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. What heatsink do you recommend?

so those cheaper ones will work well too, just asking because there is such a range of prices and models available? also, do you think its the heatsink thats the problem in my current setup or could it be something else?

Hi,

Your AMD64 3000 cranks out about 67W:

The 4200 x2: about 89W.

So, it would seem that a better cooler is a good idea.

It does not say on your gear list what sort of case you have, but of course the foundation of good cooling is good case airflow.

Next, mounting of the heatsink on the CPU: thin layer of Artic Silver or Ceramique or MX-1 or MX-2, or some other decent thermal interface material; heatsink fan/fins on heatsink itself clean and clear of dust bunnies, etc.

Of these

I like either

or

especially if you have a four pin CPU fan header on your motherboard--mobo controls the fan speed, which can be pretty low.

Note the Zalman and AC are cool and quiet: some are one or the other, but not both.
