here is what i upgraded him from

dell xps R350 (clarification, was looking at the wrong box i upgraded)
450mhz p2
64mb ram
old ass 6gb hd
windows 98
some ati video card

upgrades (all form parts i had laying around)
slotket adapter slot1-fcpga2 1.4ghz celeron (256k/100fsb)
512mb of ram
40gb hd with 8mb cache
windowsxp
radeon 9250 with vga, dvi and svideo

now my question is, do you think i'll have any problems installing a 6600gt, 6800gt, or 6800gt ultra with this setup? he has been complaining that the games he has been playing are choppy, so i suggested one of these three cards. which would be the best given i'm topped out the cpu for this board? am i going to see a huge difference between the low end and high end at 1280X1024? thats the max his 19"samsung lcd can get (at 75hz)?

anyone running a p3 or p3 celeron with these cards? whats the performance like?

as to the agp slot, can anyone find out what it is? the 9250 has 2 gaps and fits in the slot fine

a bit of a cpu bottleneck there. you should probably opt for a 6600gt at most.

for how old the hardware is, the system is pretty snappy, the added ram helped alot, the difference between 256 and 512 is large

I think you should check the AGP slot to determine which type the mobo has in it before you choose a new gfx card. The voltage varies from 3.3v - 1.5v - .8v depending on the slot type/version.

Determine the slot type (ex. agp 2x or 4x) and get the best card you can.

Thats a pretty bland statement. the fact is on a slow enough computer (which his is) the 6600GT and a 6800 Ultra should put out the same performance.

I don't think you get it. He prolly CAN'T use a 6600GT etc. He needs to first determine what type/version of AGP slot he has.

Unitl he does and tells us, we can't intelligently recommend any card. To be blunt, it's irresponsible to recommend a 6600GT etc at this point (maybe you can tell what agp slot type it is from the above provided data, I can't. So tell me).

By the way, this is his question:

now my question is, do you think i'll have any problems installing a 6600gt, 6800gt, or 6800gt ultra with this setup?

and then this comment:

i may be wrong it might be 2X

So, I think my response was pretty damn well on point.

The efficiency of the gains may be pretty low, but you probably will see at least some sort of difference between a midrange (6600) and higher end card (6800U). Although, depending on the games, I would say the 6600GT is the highest you should aim for. That's a pretty big difference from the 9250.

And check any documentation for the AGP type. Or at least look at the physical placement of the pins on the cards (you can compare yours to ones on a site like Newegg.com). If it's not at least AGP4x, you'd have to get the best you could in the 9000 or 5000 (Geforce) lines that are backward compatible (has two gaps in the pins, one for each type).

the card thats currently in it right now is a radeon 9250 (8X agp) and it seems to be happy in the agp slot, so far i have not seen any problems, even installed the latest catalyst drivers

Maybe run Everest Home Edition (or sissoft sandra etc). IIRC, it'll tell you that info.
