So I upgraded my Acer aspire 5100-5022, and now my keyboard and mouse wont work. When i boot my computer i get the following message " windows failed to start" then it asks me if i want to start in safe mode, safe mode with networking, etc.

It then prompts me to wait 30 secs then boots normally to the vista screen, but i cannot use my keyboard or mouse controls. I've tried to plug in an external keyboard and mouse but neither will work.

Is there anyway i can reformat this with neither working?

Keep tapping the 'get into setup' button (might be F2) right from the moment you hit that power button.

See if the kb settings is set to use something ridiculous.

That is if you can get in at all.

If not, a BIOS reset might be in order.
If you can get to the CMOS battery, disconnect main battery and power, and take out CMOS battery. Sometimes in a laptop it can take upto a week to clear! (And that is from experience)

I have the same problem with my acer 5102wlmi....happened after vista install and update and reboot. Has been this way since vista was released. There is no CMOS battery on the motherboard...there is a capacitor instead. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Vista is very good at repairing faulty installations. Boot with your Vista DVD, then after it gets all the files loaded, select REPAIR down at the lower left.

You will have to get hold of a ps2 kb (or at least a connector), boot into BIOS with that, then change the CMOS info to accept Legacy USB kb.

Q49: How can I go back to running Windows® XP after I have upgraded to Windows Vista??

A: Acer eRecovery Management Vista version works only with new PCs that came pre-installed with Windows Vista?. It does not work on systems that have been upgraded from Windows® XP, even if a clean install was done. Acer eRecovery Management relies on content inside the hidden partition and the content for Windows® XP and for Windows Vista? is quite different.

During the upgrade process, Acer's custom MBR (master boot record) has been destroyed by Windows Vista?, so you will lose Acer eRecovery's functionality after you restore to Windows® XP. The Acer eRecovery UI will still show up but you can no longer use it.

If you want to restore to Windows® XP after upgrading to Windows Vista?, burn a recovery CD/DVD BEFORE you upgrade to Windows Vista?.

To restore your system to Windows® XP, please follow these steps.

Change the BIOS boot sequence to Boot from your optical drive (CD/DVD).
Insert the first recovery CD.
Follow the recovery wizard to complete the restoration process.

Yeah, will have to concur with Shawn.

I can't see how an os upgrade will stop you accessing your kb at boot.
You haven't spilt a certain sugary drink on your lappy recently have you?
