The graphic card battle is getting more fierce right now. Our source just inform us that NVIDIA will upgrade GTX 260 in mid September, offering one more TPC inside the G200 GPU. The original GTX 260 have 8 TPCs (Texture Processing Cluster) totally, but the new GTX 260 have 9 TPCs. That means the numbers of shader processor have been increased from 192 to 216. In G200 chip, one TPC contains 24 shader processors. Other than the TPC upgrade, the other specs are keeps the same. That means the card still runs at 576/1242/999Mhz (core/shader/memory), Memory interface keeps 448bit, and memory size is 896MB. We guess that this upgrade will help the card to suppress HD 4870. But HD 4850 X2 is right around the corner?

Yes, 10 TPCs with 24SP in each for 240 total. Its still down 16 TMUs, 4 ROPs and a 64-bit memory controller compared to GTX 280. I doubt it'll make too much difference except in some synthetics and 3DMark Vantage. Just further proves however that GTX 260s aren't really "partially defective" by-products of poor GT200 yields, they're just voluntarily neutered GTX 280s.

In terms of performance..
Where would this "GTX 260+" fall?
Will it now beat the 4870?
If so, at what price point?

September eh? That is rumored to be when we will see a 55nm GTX280- perhaps Jen-Hsun Huang has a few tricks up his sleeve in the coming months :).

why say they 'got hosed'? faster cards come out every so often in the PC industry

people who buy this card in mid September will eventually 'be hosed' also

Ya , they got "hosed", just like the folks who bought the 512MB 4870's that run out of memory at the resolution and AA levels that they are most useful at with the 1GB versions due to arrive ;)

No, but it's definitely another way Nvidia confuses everybody by screwing up the naming.

That doesn't make much sense. Why don't they also UP the core clock?

GT260 seems to have a lot of headroom

Heck, my 4870 can handle 820/1165 with the fan set to ~50%
- i bet they can do better with the Tesla core's speed; they must also have decent yields if they can enable more TPCs

*OMG* So now that I am just about decided about getting a GTX260 (EVGA Superclocked) nV goes and spoils my plans. :p

So how much faster could a GTX*270* be over a superclocked GTX260?!

it can be made into s SuperClocked edition

all these moves are to "stall" .. Nvidia *needs* to combat the 4850
- they NEED their shrink to 55nm and these are the little adjustments they can make until then

i am really looking forward to the Empire Striking Back

they know what they have to do to beat 4870x2
- and how to take the ALL-IMPORTANT midrange back from 4850

4850 is the real threat and the big moneymaker for AMD

imo, of course

I'm not sure which camp will be on top in 6 months, but what ever the result is it will be good for the consumer.

I'm looking to upgrade in the new year and will buy what ever give me the best bang for my bux.

And, I hope NVDA get a few design win in the near future because I have vested interest with them. [crossfingers]
