Hey guys,
I just took out my Athlon 1800+ Palomino and swapped in a 2100+ Thoroughbred.
I ran 3DMark2001 SE and my score is actually pretty much the same. A tiny bit higher and sometimes a tiny bit lower.
Whats up with that? The old processor ran at 1666mhz and this one runs at 1733mhz. Shouldnt I see any improvement.
Also when i click on the system info tab on 3DMark i get all the right info on the processor. But when i go to my online manager it says unknown CPU running at 1733. Any idears there?
Does it take awhile for the processor to sink in? This is the second CPU change i've done since building the computer. I started with an 1800+ and when I changed between those I saw a noticable change in score and the CPU type took fine. This time I dont see any
All suggestions are welcome.
Rob

You're seeing things right. You'd have to upgrade to probably a 2400+ or even higher before you would notice -any- difference whatsoever. You only increased your processor clock by 4%.

well you'd see more of an increse if your 1800+ was actually running at it's stock speed ( 1533 )

1666 to 1733 will give almost no increase at all.

The 1800 was running at stock speed. And i did notice the difference from 1533 to 1666. I got maybe 800-900 points on 3DMark. But between 1666 - 1733 i'm just not seeing it. I thought maybe it had something to do with the .13 micron stuff? no?

3DMark tests much more than just your processor speed. CPU, memory subsystem, and video card are all heavily stressed. With such a small change in just one of those components, you can hardly tell the difference.

BTW, I have an XP 1800+ in my system. I don't plan on upgrading my processor until I can get ~2800+ w/333 FSB for around $100-$125. Till then the performance boost just won't be cost effective for me. YMMV.

odd upgrade IMO - 1800+ to a 2100+ but to each his own :)

And it seems right - not a huge jump (~210 mhz increase? If 100+ is 67 Mhz, then 300+ is ~210 mhz) and you shouldn't see any real increase except for many a game or two

I wouldnt pay the money for the extra jump between 1800-2000-2100xp either. But I build PC's for offices on the side so every time a processor drops in price i can throw in an extra 10-20 dollars on a customers pc and give them my old Athlon for an uprgrade. Thats cost effective.
