Upgraded firmware, SONY RW DRU-530A still only 4X.

I just walked my brother thru the firmware upgrade to version 2.1g and he calls to tell me it's still only burning at 4x. His pc is a 2.4GHz Celeron D and he's using Nero 6 w/ updates.
Media is some Verbatim 16x he got at OfficeMax.
I may trade him my Lite-On LDW-811S for his sony or suggest he buy an NEC ND-3550A BG or the Lite-On SOHW-1693S. They're so cheap now but that's probably there's something better about to be released. Any guesses?
