Upgraded CPU, Now can't get into Windows

Hey everyone.

Here's a few specs before I get started.

GA - 965P-DS3 Rev.3.3 Mobo
Intel Core 2 Q9400 (Quad Core)
6gb Ram (Corsair ddr2 - 800mhz I believe)

Anyways,

Here's what the problem is.

I upgraded my processor today, from a core 2 duo, to a core 2 quad. On the Gigabyte website, it said that as of the newest Bios (updated today), the processor works on that motherboard "unofficially" or something to that ilk. So I installed the processor (Q9400) applied thermal paste (stock fan), and hooked everything back up.

I booted the pc up, got into the bios, checked to see that the cpu temp was at 27-32 degrees Celsius, so I was satisfied, and felt like I was good to go.

I went ahead, and set my bios to failsafe settings, and went for it. I got up to the PCI booting screen, and then .. a black screen, with just a windows 7 loading bar at the bottom.

The loading was very slow, and I was able to move a mouse around. The system repair window came up, and said it was searching for problems. It found none (after 71 minutes), and said I could restore a previous time in Windows 7. I elected to do so. It worked for another hour, and then... stopped. Nothing. I ended up having to reset, and went through this twice.

I tried booting by USB HDD with windows 7 install (my disc is scratched to hell, gotta get a replacement from MS), but no luck.

I figure if I can get it going, ill try reformatting. However, I have no idea where to go from here. Did I screw something up? Is the processor not compatible?

I see the processor info in the Bios, and the bios recognizes my components. I just cannot seem to get the system going whatsoever.

Some guidance would be helpful from some folks here. It might even be to a point where I should just take it to a shop, and hope for the best, that i didn't screw something up.

Thanks in advance for your assistance. I appreciate it. Please don't hesitate to ask for more info if you need it.

The Intel P965 chipset wasn't designed to support .45 nm processors. Many board makers won't support them, although it does appear that Gigabyte went to the trouble to at least try. It looks like they even officially support Wolfsdale processors (also .45 nm) on your board. This is certainly because you have the Ver 3.3 board.

It looks like MSI also provided Wolfdale/Yorkfield support for some P965 boards.

I don't know if this is your problem, but I'd certainly dig a bit deeper and see if you can find people who are using such CPUs (Yorkfield) on the Gigabyte P965 motherboards.

hmmmm use the win 7 disk for a repair...if it boots into the bios just fine it sounds like win7 is freaking out on the new processor..

Try downloading Ubuntu and boot into it. If it works, the CPU is fine, and your Windows installation is the culprit.
