I just upgraded both my PC and my wifes PC from P3-700's to the following:
P4 2.4B ***
Intel D845PEBT2 MB ***
Mushkin 512MB PC2700 DDR Ram ***
Shuttle FSP350-60BT 350W +12V 2.03 Power Supply ***
IBM Deskstar 20GB 7200RPM Drive
Toshiba SD1212 DVDRom
Teac 1.44 Floppy
Visiontek GeForce 3 Ti200
Windows XP Pro

*** These are the new parts, everything else was already in the PC

There are no other cards in the PCs, I am using the onboard intel 10/100 LAN and onboard sound.

My PC works EXCELLENT. :) Very Happy. My wifes PC is VERY VERY VERY slow at everything. I have formatted the drive, fresh XP install, installed intel drivers from the CD and updated via windows update. All connections inside the PC are secured properly. I have flashed the bios to the latest one available. I am using the latest drivers. I am about to start swapping parts back and forth between the two, and see if the problem moves with a part. My PC can d/l from the internet at 1.1M, hers can only hit 30K. If I open a dos-window command prompt, cd to c:\windows and type 'dir' my PC responds immediately. Her PC is very slow, it takes a few seconds to display the output and the CPU is maxed at 100% during this time.

What can cause this? Any ideas? I am very frustrated and would greatly appreciate any input.

I re-installed the nvidia detonator drivers and changed the resolution and the problem with the 'dir' running slow and maxing the CPU went away. Strange. Networking problem still existed.

I then disabled the on-board Intel 10/100 LAN in the bios and installed a 3COM 905-BTX PCI NIC. Low and behold all of my networking issues are GONE. I am off to try and troubleshoot the on-board LAN now, maybe it is a bad MB.

It was a defective LAN port on the MB. I took it back to the retailer, swapped it for a new one, and life is good. :D
