upgradeable mobile video cards?

I've got an ati igp340 chip in my notebok, and I read somewhere that I can upgrade to a radeon chip. ANyone have any experience with this?

I believe all the IGPs are integrated onto the motherboard, so no I don't think you can upgrade.
Specific make/model of the laptop would be useful in determining this for a fact though.

doesnt igp stand for "integrated graphics processor"?

Yes, it does, however I was confused after reading

this.

specifically, the paragraph below:

"The RADEON IGP family also features ATI?s exclusive FLEXFITTM Universal Platform Architecture, which allows computer manufacturers to design user-upgradeable notebooks by offering a baseline platform and notebook add-in cards. ATI?s pin and driver compatible lineup of mobile processors means that OEMs only need to design one motherboard and one add-in card for multiple product segments, and can then deliver user-upgradeability without requiring the user to install a new driver."

The quote off the ATI website refers to the new IGP package, the RADEON 7000 IGP. It seems that this is actually a complete chipset for motherboards. see the references to support for DDR 333, FSB speeds, and support for both Pentium-M and Pentium 4M

here's a quote from the site referring to the 340 chipset:

"The RADEON IGP 340M also leverages ATI's exclusive FLEXFIT? Universal Platform Architecture, which allows computer manufacturers to control their engineering investment and support costs while still offering a variety of systems, each tailored to a targeted computer segment. FLEXFIT allows computer manufacturers to design products for all segments by creating a baseline platform that can be tailored to satisfy the needs of different market segments without changing the BIOS and driver set or redesigning the motherboard."

also, a quote from mbreview.com:

"It is possible now according to ATI for one to purchase an integrated graphics laptop, and at a later day also purchase a discrete video upgrade to say a 9600. "
