So I realize everyone is probably bored to death with "Upgrade" and "What about this Build?" type topics but I've got one too.
So here is the deal: I'm going off to college here at the end of the summer.
And I'd like to upgrade the old comp.
Right now it's running Win2000 Pro and Xubuntu. On the original k-6 core. (266 mhz)
As you might imagine, it'd be nice to use it for more than just word processing etc.
So here is my actual question: When I upgrade, should I
a) Go Socket 754 (Cheapest) w/PCIe mobo.
b) Go 939. Not as cheap, but more "headroom" I can upgrade to dual-core down the road.
c) Go Intel. Get a 975x mobo and the cheapest processor I can find. Then wait for Conroe.
Of course c) depends on there being "Conroe Ready" mobos.
This will be my full upgrade for at least 2 years.
754 seems attractive because it means I won't have to spend as much money now. On the other hand, when I finally do need to upgrade, I won't be able to slap another processor in and get a significantly faster system, it'll be another full upgrade, with at least a new mobo and CPU.
939... Is 939. In fact. I could go from a +3000 to an x2 if I wished. The breadth of options sounds nice.
975x... Intel... Yeah. From what I've seen, which admittedly is only from online sources, Conroe is going to absolutely blow the AM2 out of the water. So It would seem to make sense to get a compatible motherboard and bide my time.
Note: I'd rather not spend that much money, and I've already got case, monitor etc.
Your opinions?
